I'd love to hear from you!

Hi, and a warm welcome to the High Lysine Diet website! My name is Joan McGovern Tendler.  I have a Master’s Degree in Architecture, but my current passion is making healthy food for myself and my family. The High Lysine Diet was inspired by a number of things, but it was mainly started by a chance occurrence.

I had been having a great deal of muscle pain and tightness, digestive problems and fatigue, and my metabolism was very slow. I had been a vegetarian for about 30 years, and had recently been eating a lot of high-arginine nuts, seeds and quinoa for more energy.  I also was having calcium-related problems, and my doctor advised me to take vitamin D and calcium. Instead, I took some lysine to increase calcium absorption. I woke up the next day and, to my surprise, my muscles felt noticeably better, for the first time in about 4 years. That began my (exhaustive!) inquiry into what lysine does in the body, and how to get more of it in my diet. The most interesting thing that I found about lysine was that, because it occupies the active site in many enzymes and receptors, it reacts with toxins. So, lysine is depleted in this way.

I also looked into other amino acids that toxins deplete, and started taking small amounts of them as supplements. In addition, I expanded the High Lysine Diet to include other issues, especially ketosis, or fat burning. Now, I'm happy to say that my health has improved significantly in all areas. I put a powerpoint explaining a high lysine, modified ketogenic diet, which even includes bread!, on the top of the webpage. Please let me know if you have any comments or questions on lysine, or on the diet, and especially if you have experienced better health after trying out the diet for a while. Thanks so much for visiting!
